Within the first week following unprotected or inadequately protected sex, you have two options to prevent pregnancy.
Within the first five days,
you can use the emergency contraceptive pill, also called the morning-after pill.
Up to five to seven days after,
an emergency IUD insertion can both prevent pregnancy and become a method of contraception.
If you have a positive pregnancy test, you have three options:
Continue your pregnancy in order to keep your unborn child;
Continue your pregnancy for the purpose of adoption;
Terminate your pregnancy (abortion pill or surgical abortion).
You are the only one who can make this decision and you can take the time to make an informed choice. No one can question your reason(s). You know best what the right decision is for you.
You have the right to decide if and when you want children.
If you choose to terminate your pregnancy, know that it can be done at any stage, and safely so.
It has been decriminalised since 1988 across Canada.
You can access it free of charge and confidentially, in French or in English, in the Gaspésie region and on the Magdalen Islands.
If you choose this option, there are two possibilities depending on how far along you are in the pregnancy and on what is most convenient for you:
medical abortion (abortion pill); or
surgical abortion (in-clinic).
As soon as you turn 14, you don't need permission to have either of these procedures done. And whatever you decide, you are entitled to respect.
